Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is the pair of galaxies at the center of the image, located 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +8 degrees.   In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the odd category of Galaxies with Appearance of Fission.  It is one of his largest categories.

The right galaxy is magnitude 16 NGC 7837.  This galaxy spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way size diameter of 120,000 light years.  The left galaxy is 14 magnitude NGC 7838.  It is a bit larger at 160,000 light years.

I don’t see much evidence of distortion for either galaxy, so I don’t believe that they are close enough to be interacting.

5 interesting spirals are in the background.  Given the number of ellipticals in the sky, I am surprised that there are none in this view.
